A DEVELOPMENT REPORT is much more extensive and detailed than a coverage report , and it makes suggestions and offers some solutions to overcome the weak points and gaps in the script.

It includes a complete synopsis that – made by someone not involved in the creation of the script- clearly reveals if the script has the essential points and elements that will make of it a successful product. It also lets us make sure the plot and subplots are appropriately woven together.
This synopsis is followed by:

  • an analysis of the main theme: is it clearly suggested? Is this done in a subtle manner?
  • an analysis of the script's structure (acts, turning points, rhythm, etc.)
  • an analysis of the characters (background, motivations and reactions, degree of credibility, essence, relationships between them)
  • and an analysis of the dialogues (which must define the characters and set the tone of the movie or series)
  • It also includes some considerations and suggestions for production, medium, format, viability, commercial potential, target audience, etc.

A development report constitutes the starting point for the final version of the script. It is 12 to 15 pages long.

An alternative to a development report is the participation in an on-line development workshop , or an on-site script consulting session.
